This is from my blog on MySpace. I figured I’d share it with you. Thanks so much for the free hugs!
Hugging: not just for trees anymore!
I got my first “free hug” on Monday. It was the first time I ever heard of the Free Hug movement.
So here I am in Helsinki visiting my boyfriend Antti. We’d just come out of a bookstore and were in Kolmen Sepan Patsas (the square on Alexanderinkatu in front of the Three Smiths statue), where everyone has their say — including the guy with the guitar who was singing stuff out of the Bible earlier. Now, a group of students was holding up signs that said FREE HUGS!/ILMAISIA HALAUSKIA!
You have to understand: the Finnish people are usuall pretty reserved (those of us who come from warm climates and expressive cultures might consider them cold). And being in such an environment is not easy for a girl like me who is used to South Florida where because the area is full of Jews and Hispanics and Carribean folks, the culture is expressive, and where because its so transient, people are used to making new friends quickly.
Impulsively I held open my arms to one of them, the least intimidating in the group because she had glasses and a pink coat, and she embraced me for several seconds — a real hug, too. And then THANKED ME!
“Kiitos!” I replied and walked away sort of dazed and glowing.
“What’s up with that?” I asked Antti, wondering if this was some wonderful Finnish thing I had just discovered.
“I dunno,” Antti said.
So I went back to find out. I was told by two others — a round-faced blond girl and a swarthy, curly-haired guy — that it was an international movement that was started in Australia.
And maybe I was a glutton, but before I walked on, I got two more! And Antti got two as well. Sometimes a person just needs ‘em! And the great thing: for every one we got, we gave one.
Hugs keep your karma balanced!

Hello! It’s so wonderful that FreeHugs movement is going in Finland! I’m from Russia, Saint-Petersburg (Pietari), and I would like to take part in the next Helsinki freehugs, is it ok? =) When is it planned?

Wow, this sounds amazing.
I saw a video on Youtube about this and the publisher said about a lady who told him “This saved my day”.
I want to save people’s days too, when would the next Free Hug day be?

It’s pity indeed that there haven’t been any new updates for a long time.
I hope there will be new one soon or maybe someone else could arrange free hugs meeting/event in Helsinki. Winter seems to bring depression over Finland, so hugs will be needed.

Pue lämpimästi päälle, väsää oma Free Hugs!!-kylttisi ja valmistaudu halaamaan ventovieraita ihmisiä, sekä tekemään mahdollisimman monta ihmistä yllättyneeksi ja onnelliseksi.
Kokoontuminen Helsingin juna-aseman sivuovien (Sokoksen puoli) eteen klo 13.
Jo ihan oman mielenterveydenkin takia päivittäinen halailu vahvistaa!
